Accelerating the end of hunger and malnutrition - a global event

Janet Hodur, Communications Specialist, CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH), led by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

In recent years, the progress in defeating hunger has slowed – if we are to meet targets laid out in the Sustainable Development Goals to end hunger and malnutrition by 2030, there is an urgent need to pick up the pace. Yet the question remains, how to do so?

This November, the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will convene a global conversation in Bangkok, Thailand, gathering input and expertise from around the world to address this vexing question. During the event, distinguished decision makers, practitioners, and other stakeholders will share evidence and lessons learned from around the world on food and agriculture system transformation for reducing hunger and malnutrition. They will explore opportunities for scaling up successful actions and stimulating innovations that can disrupt business-as-usual to build further momentum and accelerate progress.

The event specifically aims to:

  • Take stock of progress – or lack of it – in reducing all forms of malnutrition and food insecurity globally;
  • Understand reasons for the varying degrees in progress across countries in reducing malnutrition, to draw lessons from their experiences; and
  • Identify innovations and opportunities for scaling up action to meet SDG2: to end hunger and promote sustainable development by 2030.

In an effort to engage the creativity and enthusiasm of the next generation, the conference is holding a video competition, titled “My Food, My Future.” Aspiring filmmakers age 10-25 are encouraged to submit a short video with their ideas for ending hunger and malnutrition.

Details about the event, including attendance, video submission guidelines and forms, and more, can be found on the conference website.
